MIPA makes journalists and a better press
But also better people
2019 Summer Workshop
I sat in the car, eating an ice-cream, minutes before I would have to check-in for the MIPA 2018 summer workshop. To be honest, I was nervous and had no intention of staying overnight in a college dorm with roommates I barely knew. However, the camp quickly became my favorite extracurricular experience of my high school career. The mixture of entertainment events, while also being able to immerse myself in sports journalism, was the perfect balance. Looking back on the work I did at the camp, I cringe at the fact that I didn't attribute correctly or my far-reaching analogies, but it set the foundation for the rest of my journalism career and won me a Sparty award. Download the files below to see examples of my work during the camp.

2020 Summer Workshop It only took me one day to figure out what the hype about the Bobby Hawthorne experience was all about and why it was so highly coveted. Joined by fellow journalism educator Lori Oglesbee, even though it was virtual, the camp had an array of memorable moments-- and when I received my first article back I was surprised to see how thoroughly it was littered with comments. Though it was a mere five days, I believe those days achieved more than I could do in a full year of any math class. (Click links below to see sample work. The Calvin and Hobbes piece in My life in five books was described as "very mature," by Mrs. Oglesbee and it might've just been my audio but it sounded like she was sniffling up.) 2021 Summer Workshop 3/3. How were all my MIPA camps instant successes? That's how I felt after this camp, but more than anything I was inspired to reimagine our Instagram format. Talking and learning under Tracy Anderson, the advisor of the Communicator, led me to constantly envision what more we could do with our social media, despite already having a strong overall publication. To learn more about how I implemented this knowledge click this link, to head to the multimedia tab. To the right is the first post I completed as part of the camp, simply click the post for the full caption. The task was to interview each other, and make the post one specific quote. Furthermore, as we were virtual we needed to instruct our subject on how to take the ideal photo instead of actually doing it ourselves. Below is a picture of the award. |
Making the best out of being online
Although I wasn't able to experience another MIPA in-person conference similar to my 2019 MIPA Summer Workshop experience, I took advantage of whatever additional opportunities were offered. This included the various keynote sessions offered throughout especially the 2020 unconference, in which videos were simply released for us to view. This ensured that I stayed engaged with more of the journalism world as a whole, extending past my work as part of The Emery.
